Detailed scientific information regarding the indications, dosage, potential side effects, and guidelines for use during pregnancy of Desocort or the Desoximetasone group is provided below. Always consult a specialist physician before taking any medication.
Desoximetasone cream is indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses.
The precise mechanism of the antiinflammatory activity of topical steroids in the treatment of steroid-responsive dermatoses, in general, is uncertain. However, corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. This is achieved first by the drug binding to the glucocorticoid receptors which then translocates into the nucleus and binds to DNA causing various activations and repressions of genes. It is postulated that these proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is released from membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2.
Apply a thin film of Desoximetasone Cream to the affected skin areas twice daily. Rub in gently.
Burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, skin atrophy, striae and miliaria. Adverse reactions are infrequent with topical Desoximetasone, but may occur frequently with the use of occlusive dressings.
There is no adequate and well-controlled study of Desoximetasone in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits justifies the potential risks to the fetus. It is not known whether topical administered desoximetasone could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised when topical corticosteroids are administered to a nursing woman.
This medication is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. The treated skin area should not be bandaged or covered or wrapped unless directed by the physician. Patient should report any sign of local adverse reactions especially under occlusive dressing to the physician.
