Sodium plays an important role in regulating total body water and its distribution. Sodium is the major cation in the extracellular fluid and constitutes >90% of the total cations. The acetate component is an alternative source of bicarbonate by metabolic conversion in the liver. Potassium chloride is a major cation in intracellular fluid. It plays an active role in the transmission of nerve impulses to the heart, brain and skeletal muscles; Contraction of cardiac skeletal and smooth muscles; Maintenance of normal renal function, acid-base balance, carbohydrate metabolism and gastric secretion. Sodium chloride is the major extracellular cation. It is important in electrolyte and fluid balance, osmotic pressure regulation, and water distribution because it reabsorbs sodium ions.
